In discussing his work, Heath wrote,"it is the process, the
method of development that is the life of painting, and this
absorbs my interest rather than the attractions of any
particular form or colour. The forms themselves, their size and
position, are born from the process. As I work my mind does
not remain tethered to the original source, a particular nude or
landscape. New experiences are generated by the almost
unconscious... [from] accidental manipulation of the forms on
paper or canvas one arrives at experiences that cannot be
