'In these [paintings] there is a layering and a new ordering of
familiar elements. Transparent glazes have reappeared; the
ovoid, now just a darker tone or variation of the ground colour,
overlays or underlies a broad horizontal band. Against this
backdrop - or, rather within this medium - floats the two-tier
motif of staggered verticals, now of uniform height and
marshalled into rectangular blocks. Vibrating and irradiating
each other [...] their tight colour ranges and strong tonal
rhythms shifting subtly. [T]here is a sense of them acting like a
tightrope walker's pole, balancing weight against weight,
movement against movement.'
