Cliffe was an important lecturer at the influential Bath
Academy of Art, Corsham Court, in the late 1950s / early
1960s, alongside fellow luminaries such as William Scott,
Peter Lanyon, Terry Frost and Bryan Wynter. He represented
Britain with Ben Nicholson, Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud,
at the Venice Biennale in 1954, and again in 1960 alongside
Victor Pasmore and Eduardo Paolozzi. His first solo show was
with The Redfern Gallery in 1956, the year before 'Corsham,
Evening' was painted. He continued to exhibit widely
throughout his career, winning many international awards, and
his work can be found in numerous important public and
private collections around the world.
