DAVID SMITH
(1920-1998)

Biography
Painter, draughtsman, printmaker and teacher, born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, where he attended the Technical School and Lowestoft and Norwich Schools of art. From 1939-40, Smith was visiting art master at Framlingham College. During the war years 1940-45 he served in the Royal Air Force and a group of his wartime pictures toured the UK in aid of a forces charity.
After the war Smith studied at the Slade School of Art, winning the Abbey Major Rome Scholarship at British School, Rome in 1949.

In 1951 he was elected RE and had over 60 solo shows in both the UK and abroad, including mixed exhibitions at the Royal Academy, London Group, New Art Centre and various galleries. 1965-79 he was senior lecturer in fine art at Chelsea School of Art.

Smith was official artist to the British Antartic Survey 1975-6, then again 1979-80. In 1982-84 he was invited by Trinity House to record the lighthouses of England and Wales. He illustrated Richard Woodman's book 'View from the Sea' and Antony Fogg's 'The Discovery of Antartica'.

Many coporate, private and public collections hold examples of his work, including HRH Duke of Edinburgh, Antarctic Survey, Barclays Bank, Blackpool Gallery, Lincoln Museum, Portsmouth Museum & Gallery and Sheffield Museum amongst others.
