Biography
Painter, born in London. She attended Putney School of Art,
but economic necessity forced her to work for Prudential Assurance
Company from 1915-22, after which she studied at Regent Street
Polytechnic School of Art.
She
was married to antiques dealer Jacob Mendelson, 1923-28, but
then met and later married David Bomberg. She continued to paint
with Bomberg widely overseas and became a member of the Borough
Group in the late 1940's, showing at the Archer Gallery, Arcade
Gallery and elsewhere.
The
Ben Uri Gallery held a retrospective of her work in 1980, from
which the Tate Gallery purchased a landscape entitled 'Tajo
Ronda'. After Bomberg's premature death in 1957, Lilian devoted
her remaining years (with the support of her daughter Dinora
Mendelson) promoting Bomberg's achievements.
