Biography
Painter and multi-talented designer, born in Warsaw, Poland,
travelled to settle in England with his parents as a small boy
in 1883. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools in the mid-1890's,
winning a silver medal for drawing in 1897.
He had
his first one-man show at Bruton Galleries in 1905 and went
on to exhibit regularly at the Royal Academy (1901-36); Allied
Artists' Association (1908-16); International Society (1911-25);
and the first Post-Impressionist Exhibition (1910-11) organised
by Roger Fry. He
also began to show in Europe and America during this period.
Wolmark
also designed two Diaghilev ballets in 1911; a stained glass
window for St. Mary's Church, Slough, 1915; and decorative pottery
for an exhibition at Martyn's Gallery in 1916.
Towards
the end of his life he had numerous solo exhibitions at Ben
Uri Gallery, London (who gave him a memorial show in 1961).
The Fine Art Society held a substantial retrospective in 1970.
Wolmark's
work is featured in many public and private collections, including
Tate Gallery and National Portrait Gallery, London
